It was because of Allah’s continuous help and blessings that
such an arduous task could be completed spanning well over two
years.
Having graduated with a degree in science and then having
spent 18 years in the diplomatic profession, I had no idea
about English literature and the intricacies of translating
from one foreign language to another. It was made possible and
easy by the consistent help, encouragement, and incessant
criticism of Rehab El-Kobtan. I admire her patience and
perspicacity coupled with her innate love for literature that
guided me all the way through the complexities of the Arabic
language and poetry.
I continued to get valuable advice from my colleagues in the
Embassy, especially Muhammad Ayyub and Babar Mahmood.
Zakariya Babur, a dear friend, has been immensely helpful with
his computer skills that proved timely during the preparation
of the final draft and its subsequent publication. He was also
instrumental in designing the website for the Qaseeda:
The entire project
owes itself to Hafiz Munir, my spiritual mentor, who conceived
the idea of this translation and despite my hesitation,
remained insistent that I should undertake it. A sufi and a
savant, his undiminishing interest and constant vigil saved me
from the ideological pitfalls that were encountered during the
course of the translation.
I also owe a lot to all those who encouraged me in this
difficult task and contributed with their valuable suggestions
at various stages.
Without my wife’s support and my daughters’ patience this task
would have seemed even more Herculean.
In the end, I humbly wish to
submit that all what I have done is dedicated to Allah and His
beloved Prophet. If this humble effort has moistened an eye
and softened a heart, this is the most valuable reward that I
can wish for here and in the hereafter. May Allah increase the
pain of love in our hearts for his beloved Prophet.
